Her story has become the stuff of legend. Daughter of Chief Powhatan of the Powhatan tribe, she was said to have helped colonial settlers in Jamestown. She eventually married John Rolfe, and went with him to England where she took on an English language name, Rebecca Rolfe and embraced the Christian faith. Her high profile life in London was said to include an introduction to Queen Anne. She later gave birth to a son, Thomas. She died tragically young in 1617. The historical account is at variance with what really happened, as she has been romanticized and her relationship with the English settler John Smith is a centerpiece of that unending fascination.

While the Disney animated Pocahontas movie of recent memory — with its numerous songs including the popular Academy Award winning “Colors of the Wind” — has presented a stylized and fictionalized version of the real Pocahontas, and it was followed by a great deal of franchised merchandise including the Sega video game. However, it was not the first time that her story was recounted. It has endured, in fact, for more than two hundred years and to some degree has shaped perceptions of Native American culture. As such she has become the archetypal Indian princess with Pocahontas. Despite the historic distortion, the story — especially since the Disney movie in 1995 — has brought a resurgence of interest in Native American culture, especially for young girls who find her a heroine to emulate.
